The 2008 Proof Gold Eagles were released during a turbulent year for precious metals prices and significant uncertainty in the global financial landscape. These factors combined to result in extremely low sales across all product options.
Sales for the individual proof coins and four coin set began at the US Mint on March 4, 2008. The initial pricing for the coins was significantly higher than the previous year, reflecting the strong performance of gold. The individual one ounce proof coins were priced at $1,199.95 each, compared to initial pricing of $789.95 in the prior year. Other ordering options were priced similarly higher.
For the most part, the US Mint retained the same product limits and maximum mintages as the prior year. The one exception was for the individual one ounce coin, which had the limit increased from 18,000 to 25,000 units.
Shortly after the start of sales, the market price of gold extended to a temporary peak above $1,000 per ounce. In the following months, the price would drop significantly finally bottoming in October at just under $700 per ounce. During this entire decline, pricing for the coins remained the same, providing a disincentive to buyers. Prices were finally adjusted late in the year, resulting in sell outs of the US Mint's remaining inventory. None of the products came close to their product limits, but rather sold out after the US Mint's inventory had been sold.
The final mintages for the 2008 Proof Gold Eagles ended up at historic lows. The tenth ounce, quarter ounce, and half ounce coins marked all time lows for proof Gold Eagles of their respective denominations. This is based on total mintages counting both individual and set sales.
