After making minor adjustments to product limits for the past several years, the US Mint aggressively increased the limits for the 2007 Proof Gold Eagle products. With the highest limits in place, none of the products managed to sell out, although final sales totals were up across the board compared to the prior year.
The product limit for the individual one ounce coin was increased from 12,000 to 18,000. The increases for other individual options were from 10,000 to 15,000 for the half ounce, from 12,000 to 16,000 for the quarter ounce, and from 25,000 to 30,000 for the tenth ounce. Finally, the limit for the four coin proof set was increased from 27,000 to 35,000.
Sales for the 2007 Proof Gold Eagles began on February 5, 2007. The coins carried the same design with Saint Gaudens famous rendition of Liberty, which had previously been used for the double eagle, on the obverse and Miley Busiek's family of eagles on the reverse.
Initial pricing was established for each product option, but this would be changed during the year as the price of gold increased sharply. In order to adjust prices, the US Mint would have to temporarily suspend sales, publish new pricing information in the Federal Register, and then resume sales once the new pricing became effective.
During 2007, the price of gold started the year around $640 per ounce. In September, the price broke above the $700 level and rapidly ran up to $850 before a choppy period of pullbacks saw the price swing above and below the $800 level. Gold finished the year at $833.75 per ounce.
