The 2004 Proof Gold Eagle was made available to collectors on May 24, 2004. Adjustments were made to the pricing and production limits, as a result of the continued rise in the price of gold.
Since bottoming in early 2001, the market price of gold had risen from just over $250 per ounce to more than $400 per ounce. This rise would only account for the initial portion of what would be a much longer term bull market for gold and other precious metals. Since the American Gold Eagle proof coins were valued predominantly on their gold content, the US Mint's prices would increase accordingly.
The one ounce 2004 Proof Gold Eagle was priced at $675. This compared to a price of $550 in effect for the 1986 Proof Gold Eagle, $585 for the 1987 to 1989 dated coins, $570 for 1990 to 1995 dated coins, $589 for 1996 to 1997 dated, $570 for 1998 to 2002 coins, and $630 for the prior year 2003-dated coins. Pricing for individual fractional options and the combined four coin set showed similar fluctuations over the course of the series.
For the present year, the product limits were adjusted slightly from the prior year. The limit for the individual one ounce and quarter ounce coins was increased by 1,000 units. The limit for the four coin set was increased by 4,000 units.
Ultimately, product sales remained around the same levels that had been achieved in the prior year despite the pricing and limit adjustments.
