While the production and offering details of the 2001 Proof Gold Eagle remained unchanged from the prior two years, other changes occurred this year for the "family of eagles" offered by the United States Mint.
Starting with this year, production of the 2001 Proof Silver Eagle was shifted to the West Point Mint facility. The coins had not been struck their in proof format since the 1995-W proof, created as a special addition to the 1995 Proof Gold Eagle Anniversary Set. With this change, the proof Gold, Silver, and Platinum Eagles were now all struck at the West Point Mint.
The United States Mint began accepting orders for the 2001 Proof Gold Eagles on April 18, 2001. This continued the early offering date adopted several years previous to give collectors an earlier opportunity to update their collections, as well as purchase current year dated coins for gift giving occasions.
With a relatively stable market price of gold, the prices for the individual and four coin set option remained unchanged for a third straight year. The product limits were also kept unchanged after two successive sell outs were achieved. For the present year, sales were not up to the same levels. A sell out did occur for the individual one ounce option, but the other products fell a bit short of the mark.
