The 1999 Proof Gold Eagle experienced higher sales levels across each product option. The increased interest was driven by higher awareness of the safe haven offered by precious metals ahead of Y2K, rising market prices for gold, and possibly the fact that these issues would represent the last Proof Gold Eagles of the millennium.
The United States Mint began accepting orders for the coins starting on April 30, 1999. Price levels remained unchanged from the previous year, although maximum mintage levels were altered slightly. The one ounce proof coin saw its individual limit reduced, while the one-tenth ounce coin had its limit increased. The other individual options and four coin set remained at the same limits established in the previous year.
After six weeks of availability, sales had reached around 50% of the maximum for each option, well ahead of prior year sales levels. The United States Mint alerted customers to the strong possibility of a full sell out before year end.
Sales had reached two-thirds of the maximum levels by late July. In November, the one ounce individual option sold out. This was closely followed by a sell out of the remaining individual options, and finally the four coin set. Excluding specially issued sets, this represented the first time that Proof Gold Eagles achieved a sell out.
